Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program

A very successful program, brain injury rehabilitation at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital has a highly specialized staff. Treatment for cognitive (thought) impairments and behavioral changes are provided through physical, occupational, speech and psychological therapies.  Programs and services such as the Special Intensive Assistance Program (which gives patients intensive one-on-one supervision), chemical dependency counseling, audiology testing and vision screening complete the range of care. In addition to the general therapy areas, the brain injury unit has its own treatment space to provide quiet, confusion-free care.

Musculoskeletal Program

The musculoskeletal center staff works with patients who experience the many disorders that can affect nerves, muscles, and bones. Some of the conditions people in this program have experienced are amputation, joint replacement, cerebral palsy, MS or Guillian-Barre Syndrome. By using advanced equipment and special devices, patients build their strength and stamina and regain ability.

Spinal Cord Injury Program

This program treats the full range of disabilities associated with spinal cord injury. Some patients have only mild paraparesis or slight paralysis of the legs. Others enter the program with complete quadriplegia, unable to move their arms and legs.

The emphasis of the spinal cord injury rehabilitation program is to help patients adjust to a new and different way of living. Physical therapists target mobility skills. Occupational therapists work with patients on daily living, personal care, visual and cognitive skills. Therapeutic recreation helps patients find new ways to enjoy hobbies and activities. Nurses and physicians focus on respiration, skin breakdown prevention and care, and bowel and bladder function. Social work and psychological services are very important aspects of this rehabilitation program.  These services help patients adjust to the emotional and social aspects of disabilities, including the issues patients must face once they leave the hospital.
