Recreation Therapy
Recreation Therapy uses leisure activities as a form of treatment for individuals with impairments, such as physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental illness as well as older adults with limitations. Patients participate in activities based on their interest or they are introduced to activities that they have never performed. Patients benefit from these activities mentally, physically and socially.
A prescribed activity helps individuals cope with stress, improves physical ability, alleviates fear, boosts confidence and self-reliance, and strengthens interpersonal skills. As a result, this form of therapy prepares people for managing their disability to achieve and maintain the highest level of independence, productivity and well being.
The Recreation Therapy program includes, but is not limited to:
One-on-one instruction
Group activities
Adapted Sports (such as archery, air rifle, golf, bowling, bocce, billiards and darts)
Horticulture and herb gardens
Evening and weekend programs
Pet visitations
Community re-entry

Staff:
The department is staffed by three part-time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Therapists (CTRS)
Speech Pathology and Audiology Department
Audiology Department
The Audiology Department provides inpatient and outpatient services. The department is conveniently located in the outpatient area of the hospital. Our sound proof suite is handicap accessible. We have a direct TTY phone system for the hearing impaired at (330) 841-3506
Our audiologist provides evaluation and treatment for pediatric to geriatric patients who experience hearing problems that may be associated with:
Hearing loss due to aging
Trauma to the ear
Disease (tumor growth)
Multiple middle ear infections
Loss of hearing at birth or in childhood
At Hillside, we strive for higher quality of care standards, which include audiological evaluations for the neurological involved inpatients (Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Vascular Accident, etc.).
Audiology provides outpatient services for all age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics. We provide comprehensive audiological evaluation, which may include Otoacoustic Emission testing and Auditory Brainstem Response testing.
Services include:
Pure tone evaluations
Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response testing
Tympanometry
Acoustic reflex and decay testing
Industrial hearing conservation testing
Hearing aids and assistive listening devices
Pediatric audiology services. Our audiologist supervises the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program at Trumbull Memorial Hospital (TMH). Should a newborn not pass the hearing screening at TMH, further diagnostic testing is strongly recommended. Follow-up pediatric audiological services are provided at our Hillside campus.
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing, position statement 2000, along with recent research, has delineated that methodology and test parameters for testing infants under 7 months old is different from testing infants over 7 months of age.
We are trained and equipped to test both infants and children with the latest state-of-the-art instrumentation. In some cases, moderate sedation is required to perform electrophysiologic audiometric testing. During sedated testing (ABR/ASSR), the child is under the care of the Anesthesia staff at Forum Health’s Outpatient Surgery Center.
Hearing aid services. Our licensed, certified Audiologist provides all hearing aid services under the best professional and clinical setting. We offer and dispense a variety of models that include the latest digital technology from various manufacturers. All styles are available including behind the ear, in the ear, in the canal or complete in the canal. We provide services to patients insured under Medicaid and Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps.
Speech Pathology
The Department of Speech Pathology provides comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, consultative and educational services for inpatients and outpatients of all ages who experience communication, cognition and/or swallow impairments.
The purpose of the Speech Pathology Department is to provide the means to assist in the realization of the patient’s optimal rehabilitation potential within the services provided. Speech pathologists provide evaluation and treatment for people of all ages (pediatric to elderly) who experience communication, cognition and/or swallowing impairments. Some of the many conditions these problems may be associated with include:
Delayed speech and language development in childhood
Patient needs are assessed through formal standardized and non-standardized testing as well as information provided by patient, staff, family and significant others.
The Speech Pathology Department has the support of all services provided by Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital and other Forum Health campuses. ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) physician consultation is also provided on an as needed basis.
The Ohio Board of Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Preferred Practice Patterns for Speech Pathology (ASHA) are the relevant regulatory agencies and guidelines for practice.
Hours of operation: Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Additional inpatient hours are Saturday, 8 a.m. – Noon and Sunday, as needed (primarily for admission evaluations).
Speech Pathology also provides services to the Mahoning Valley Hospital Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) unit at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Services are contractually provided on a daily basis Monday through Friday.
Speech Pathology and Audiology Department Staff and Education. All speech pathologists have a minimum of a Masters degree from an accredited school in Speech Pathology and are licensed in the state of Ohio to provide the full range of services. These professionals also have the Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association or they are Clinical Fellows in the process of attaining the certificate.
Our audiologist holds a master’s degree from an accredited school in audiology, is licensed in the State of Ohio and has a Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association
The speech pathologists and clinical supervisor maintain active caseloads for inpatients and outpatients. The clinical supervisor’s caseload is the most responsive to significant volume increases. Staff to patient ratio is a constant 1:1. Group therapy is considered as a supplement to the former.
Neuromuscular Retraining
The staff in this program works with patients who have experienced loss of muscle control. In neuromuscular retraining, patients relearn how to use their muscles through the use of external cues. These external cues are provided through computerized visual and auditory feedback.
Vocational Rehabilitation Program
Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital offers a full range of vocational rehabilitation services designed to determine a person’s ability to perform job-related functions.
Work Adjustment is a training program designed to help disabled individuals develop positive self-esteem and appropriate work behaviors.
Vocational Evaluation helps individuals with physical or emotional disabilities identify vocational interests, abilities and work skills that fall within their capabilities.
Additional vocational services are available on an as needed basis including skill transfer analysis, situational assessment and career counseling.
Vision Screening
Many persons who have had a stroke or brain injury also experience a loss of vision. The Occupational Therapy Department can perform a vision screening that maps damage done to the retina of the eye or problems with depth perception. This information about the patient’s type of vision problem is very useful in designing treatment programs and determining if patients can see well enough to drive.
Family and Support Services
Support Systems
Family members and significant others are very important to the rehabilitation process. They need to understand what is happening to patients and how patients are progressing. Each Hillside program offers an educational component that family members and patients are encouraged to attend. A case manager may also be assigned to meet with the patient and family to review changes in the treatment plan. In addition, the family will be taught how to best assist patients when they are discharged from Hillside programs or services.
Discharge Planning
Inpatients at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital receive the services of a case manager who coordinates and helps arrange for the post-discharge needs of patients and families within the community.
Adapted Sports Program
The Adapted Sports Program was restructured in 2004 from a program previously known as GOLFF (Go On Living For Fun) for our disabled and/or senior wellness. The Adapted Sports Program maintains the same philosophy, which introduces individuals to a variety of activities that they can benefit from both therapeutically and recreationally. Our goal is to increase wellness and decrease the risk of injuries and accidents.
Adapted Sports is staffed with occupational, physical and recreational therapists as well as local teaching professionals both on and off campus.
The HRH Sports Complex, located on Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital’s campus, is the home of the Adapted Sports Program. The complex includes an all-accessible golf training area for chipping and putting, five full-swing golf stations, a bocce court, a nine-hole miniature golf course, a pavilion, an archery range and an accessible multipurpose activity court fro basektball, volleyball and tennis. Each activity is offered one to two times weekly with trained professionals. The complex has accommodated schools in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties with field trips.
The Driver’s Training program helps people with physical or cognitive impairments learn to drive or continue driving to live as independently as possible. The program evaluates alternative ways to drive, including the use of hand controls and other adaptive equipment. Each person receives an evaluation of vision, extremity strength, coordination, cognitive status, reaction time and driving in a variety of driving environments. A physician, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, or case manager's referral is needed for the program. For more information about the program, contact Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital at 330-841-3893.
